In the middle of the large cave there is a massive stalagmite in the shape of a bear. Tradition connects this cave with the worship of Goddess Artemis. After another 15 min. walk you find your self at the old monastery of Katholiko. It is a Byzantine rock-carved building of the 11th century, with an impressive Venetian façade, perhaps the most ancient monastery on Crete. After numerous pirates# raids the monks abandoned it in the 16th century and stays uninhabited since then. You can visit the nearby cells and crypts, while west of the monastery you can find the entrance to a deep cave in which St. John the Hermit (Xenos) spent his ascetic days. You can walk for approx. 20 min. to the bottom of this cave, kind of easy walk, but not recommended for claustrophobics

  • Balos by boat From the lovely town of Kastelli-Kissamos in western Crete the cruise boats leave daily in high season to take visitors on a delightfully scenic cruise to the islets, with an optional walk up to see the ruins of the castle, and swimming in Balos Lagoon.
  • Chania Chania is the capital city of the prefecture of Chania.
  • Chania Municipal Market Chania Municipal Market is located in the centre of Chania, in the heart of the city, where the main bastion of the fortifications stood in Venetian times. Up to the late 19th century this was the edge of town. There were rough butchers’, fishmongers’ and grocers’ shops, inns, etc. In modern terms, this was the farmers’ street market, where villagers brought their goods for sale.
  • Elafonisi Island Elafonisi Island is near the southeast tip of Crete, 43km from Kastelli and 76km from Chania. The road from Chrisoskalitissa continues as a dirt track of 5km to Elafonisi. There are organized bus tours from Kastelli and Chania as well as boat tours from Paleohora to Elafonisi. The area of Elafonisi has beautiful beaches, in front of which is the island of Elafonisi itself. This lovely islet was the site of a massacre of 850 women and children by the Turks in 1824. The women and children were hidden there and as the Turks camped on the beaches a horse found the shallow, 0.5 - 0.8 metre-deep water path to the island. The Turks discovered the women and children and slaughtered them. There is a memorial plaque on the highest point of the islet
  • Elafonnissi-Kedrodasos Or 'Cedars Grove' in English. It was a hidden paradise for many years and only few knew how to actually go there. The real issue is how long will the name apply to the area since cedars grow only a centimeter per year, and certain humans (?) cut roots and branches of the trees for their campfires. A fantastic place to camp and enjoy some serenety away from the thousands of tourists who invade nearby Elafonisi.

  • Falassarna Falasarna and the beaches along the far west end of Crete are peacful and beautiful, there are just a few simple tavernas and hardly any thing to do but walk, walk and absorbe the wild beuty of the place. The beachs are wide, sandy and seem endless. In the hills behind the beaches you find the ruins of the antient city and harbour of Falasarna.
  • Falassarna Ancient The ancient city of Falasarna is being excavated. The excavations have exposed some of the walls and buildings of the city. The geographical shift (rise) of Crete has put the ancient harbour on dry land. Falasarna was a commercial naval power during the Hellenistic period and also the harbour of Polirinia. An interesting throne, carved out of rock, is on the dirt track as you enter the ancient city.

  • Gramvoussa On the NW coast of Crete the west coast of the gulf of Kissamos projects northwards and forms a promontory that the ancients named Korykos Akran. West of this tongue of land are two small rocky islets. The one north of the promontory is Agriogramvoussa, south of it and to the west is Gramvoussa itself.Due to its strategic location, Gramvoussa was fortified by the Venetians, who built a well-fortified castle on the top of a steepy rock at an altitude of 137 m. Construction on the castle of Gramvoussa started in 1579 and ended in 1582. It was destroyed in 1588, however, when thunder struck on the powder store. The castle was rebuilt in 1630. It was one of the three castles to remain under Venetian dominion after the Turkish occupation of Crete (the other two were those of Sitia and Spinalonga). Even though the castle was impregnable, during the Venetian-Turkish war the Italian commandant was bribed by the Turks and he gave over the castle in 1692.
  • Kaliviana-Balos West of Kissamos and north of the beautiful village of Kaliviani, stretches the impressive Gramvoussa peninsula. The peninsula is formed by steep rocks and is covered with thyme and origanum bushes and wild flowers. On the north west side of the peninsula opposite to the island of Gramvoussa is the wonderful beach of Balos. The beach is covered with fine white sand and is located between the two creeks of the Tigani cape. The same white sand covers the bottom of the sea and grants to the sea an emerald color. In front of the beach is the picturesque island of Gramvoussa and on the back is the Geroskinos mountain (altitude 762 m).The road from Kaliviani is well paved dirt road, with amazing view to the steep rocky seaside of the east side of the peninsula. The road ends one-two km before the beach, and the visitor can follow a pave road to Balos.

  • Polirinia Polirinia is the site of remains from the sixth century B.C., Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian eras. The remains that are visible now are mostly from the second Byzantine and the Venetian periods.

  • The cave of Aghia Sofia The cave of Aghia Sofia is situated at less than 2 kilometres after the village Topolia, on the road leading from Kastelli to Elafonissos. A short path gets the visitor to the cave and the tiny church of Aghia Sofia within it. It is found at a height of 285 metres; the main hall is of a diameter of 70 metres and of a height of 20 metres. Huge stalactites, more than 5 metres high, and even huger stalagmites decorate the cave. A few fig trees have grown in the cave and the moss on the rocks paint its walls in deep green. Archaeological surveys in the cave have shown that man has used it since as early as the Neolithic period. Throughout history the cave has been used for various purposes and there are many local legends about it. The most common of them is the popular belief that there is the hoof print of St. George’s horse in the cave; as the locals say it is well visible somewhere on a rock.
  • The Chrisoskalitissa Monastery The Chrisoskalitissa Monastery is 38km south of Kastelli, on the west coast of Crete, 71km from Chania. In the area of Chrisoskalitissa evidence of a Minoan settlement has been found. The name of the monastery of Chrisoskalitissa (Golden Stair) came from a tradition saying that one of the 90 stairs to the top of the monastery is golden but only a person without sin can see it. A few nuns live here. The view of the surrounding area from the monastery is exceptional, although the monastery itself has no old buildings.
